Addressing Anti-Black Racism (Parts 1 and 2 only)

Part I Independent Homework provided by email.

Part II “Context” Nov. 27, 2024 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In order to effectively address anti-Black racism, we need to define it, acknowledge it and be aware of its origins. This workshop traces a Canadian history, delves into understanding of key concepts (white supremacy, oppression, microaggression) and ends with practical, moving-forward, steps including case-study analysis.

Note: Part III Action will be rescheduled for a later date.

Focus on Poverty Workshop Dec. 4, 2024 — 5 to 7 pm

The workshop uses statistics, narratives, and group interaction to explore the topic of poverty, to challenge our biases, and to reimagine how we can address poverty in ourcommunities.

Cultivating Resiliency Workshop Dec. 11, 2024 — 5 to 7 pm

Conflict resolution skills are an important component of effective interpersonal relationships. During this workshop participants will examine the sources of conflict that can occur between/among colleagues in the workplace, understand the reasons for addressing conflicts, and explore a three-step approach for managing them.

Classroom Management Workshop Jan. 8, 2025 — 5 to 6.30 pm

Effective classroom management skills are essential in providing a positive and secure environment where students can achieve their potential. Participants will learn practical strategies for creating a positive learning environment and will have opportunities to address some of the behaviours they face. The workshops for OTs and those in Early Years address the unique challenges that each group faces in dealing with classroom management.

Please find the instructions to apply for the OTBU Professional Development Fund below and on the application itself. Choose the application format that is easiest for you:

Submission Requirements

Submissions must include proof of payment from the provider of the course or event.
 

Additional Requirements
  1. You must be a member of the District 18 Occasional Teachers' Bargaining Unit (OTBU) on the date the application is reviewed.

  2. You must be a member of the D18 OTBU on the date the professional activity takes place.
     

Funding Restrictions (Subject to Change)
  1. The maximum funding per person is $550.00 per school year for events considered eligible by the committee.

  2. Funding may be less than $550.00 if the number of applicants in any one eligibility period is high.

  3. Coverage for your replacement cost while on an LTO assignment is not an eligible request.

  4. This fund may not be used for the Principal's Qualification Program.
     

Calendar-related Restrictions
  1. There are three submission deadlines each year: September 30, February 28, and May 31.

  2. The PD Committee considers applications after the submission deadline for each time period.

  3. The submission must arrive within twelve (12) months of the completion of the professional activity.

  4. Incomplete submissions will be returned. They may be re-submitted for consideration within the next time period.

If your application is approved, when can you expect a cheque?

  • The PD Committee will schedule a meeting to consider all applications after the final submission date for each time-period.

  • Payment for approved expenses will be mailed when the OTBU Executive meets following the decision of the PD Committee.
